POLIS DNA

WHO WE ARE

OUR STORY

A People. A Place.  A Way of Life.

POLIS is a vibrant young church in the heart of Tacoma, Washington, shaped by Jesus and committed to the renewal of the world.

The word polis is an ancient Greek word for a city, not merely a place, but an organized community of people sharing civic life. We believe God's renewal of humanity isn't merely individual. God creates a people. Those people share life together. And they are sent to faithfully inhabit the places where God has put them.

A diverse group of smiling friends huddle together for a photo. Two men hold up small signs that say 'Feeling Blessed' and 'Gotta Have FAITH'.

our mission

"We exist to form a people shaped by Jesus for the renewal of the world"

OUR VISION

HERE IN MY HOME IN MY WORK IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD
As in Heaven.

Wherever you are, heaven should begin to leave its mark. In your home, in your workplace, in your relationships.

About US

Our Core Values

JESUS IS OUR MESSAGE

Jesus’ life, death, and Resurrection are Good News and it is the only news  we center our teaching and thinking around.

WE HONOR GOD BY LOVING OUR NEIGHBORS

People matter to God. All people are created in the image of God. We are  not a commodity to Him.

CURIOSITY IS WELCOME

We all have questions about life, faith, and existence. We are interested in  exploring the nuance of those questions and seeing how Scripture answers them.

WE LEVERAGE OUR LIVES FOR SOMETHING GREATER

Following Jesus calls us into participation. We bring our gifts, abilities,  resources, relationships, and lives to the work God is doing rather than  just consuming church.

WE ARE A COMMUNITY

Life is better lived with deep friendships. We are not made to traverse life  alone. God has always desired for His People to enjoy life together.

URGENCY IS HOLY

We work, pray, and worship like we are running out of time...because we  are. Jesus is coming back and we want to see our city changed before He  does.

About POLIS

What to Expect from POLIS

We are deeply committed to forming people to be like Jesus and we happen to believe your life becomes more fruitful when you live more like Jesus. Our formation strategy  centers around three things

Our Sunday morning Gatherings center around engaging and passionate worship;  practical and direct biblical preaching; and being a hospitable place for the curious.  Being a part of our Gatherings will help you live more connected to others and God.

Our Groups are intentionally small and placed in intimate settings. Regardless of what  Group you plug into, we will be practicing the same things: Bible reading, meaningful  prayer, communion, and eating. These disciplines help us slow down to be aware of  God’s presence in our lives

Church should be fun and a place you can go to make encouraging relationships. Our church holds regular opportunities for you to simply come laugh, network, and have great  conversation.

our beliefs

Clarity is kindness, so we want you to know exactly what theology, doctrine, and beliefs ground our church. We hold to the traditional/orthodox teachings of Scripture that are expressed in the Apostle’s Creed. Learn more below

01 Apostles' Creed

"I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,  born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was  buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into  heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living  and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen."

Footnote: “catholic” means universal, the worldwide Church of Jesus across all time  and place, not specifically the Roman Catholic Church that we know today)

02 God

There is only one supreme God and He has made Himself knowable. He has no
beginning nor any end. He uniquely exist in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
yet all of One essence.

03 Jesus Christ

The Nicene Creed articulates Christ accurately and poetically: “...and in one Lord Jesus  Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of  God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance  with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us men for our salvation, came  down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was  buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into  heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to  judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.”

04 The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is eternally one with the Father and the Son. He is not a distant force,  but the living presence of God who dwells within His people. He convicts us of sin,  reminds us of the words of Jesus, guides us into truth, and intercedes for us in our  weakness. He fills and empowers every believer, giving gifts for the building up of the  Church and boldness to proclaim the good news of Jesus. By His presence and power,  He forms us into the likeness of Christ and enables us to live lives that are pleasing to  God. We believe the Holy Spirit is present, active, and powerful and that the Church  cannot fulfill the mission of Jesus apart from Him.

05 The Gospel

The Gospel simply means Good News. It is the proclamation that the finished and sacrificial work of Jesus has rescued us from the dominion of our sins, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, we have been made new and alive. This Good News is available to every man and woman who puts their faith in Jesus.

06 Scripture

The Bible is the written authoritative Word of God that was scribed and canonized by  imperfect men under the direction of the Holy Spirit. All Scripture is infallible and inerrant and tells us the story, character, and heart of God.

07 The Church

The Church is the communion of those who have put their faith and trust in the lordship  of Jesus. The local church is the cultural and geographic representation of God’s  People.
